Shirley Jo Gay

Mrs. Shirley Sweeney Gay, 67, a resident of Lapine, Alabama, passed away peacefully at Crenshaw Community Hospital on Thursday, March 23rd, 2023.

Shirley was a boisterous woman who truly loved life and all of its joys. She had a great sense of humor and loved to make others laugh. She was a dedicated worker who was never afraid to get her hands dirty, whatever it took to get the job done. Shirley also loved her Lord and never failed to wonder at the magnificence he created in nature. Finally, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt who always made her family her priority at all times.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Gay II; father, Woodrow Sweeney; and brother, Leo Sweeney. She is survived by her loving daughter, Tabitha Ann Hodgkins; granddaughters, Anicia (Dillon) Bush and Mia Raven Torres; great-grandchildren, Darian Theo Bush, Daphne Sage Bush, and Dove Willow Bush; mother, Eunice Mae Woods Sweeney; siblings, Pamela (Bob) Darling, Larry Sweeney, Starlene Sweeney, Tommy (Linda) Sweeney, James Dean Sweeney, and Bobbi Jo (Marla) Sweeney; and multiple generations of loving nieces and nephews.

The family will hold a private memorial service at a later time.
