Shirley West Neal, 75, a resident of Luverne, Alabama, passed away peacefully at Crenshaw Community Hospital on Thursday, July 17th, 2025. A graveside service for Shirley will be held at 9:30 AM on Saturday, July 19th, in Luverne Emmaus Cemetery with Rev. Dunford Cole officiating and Turners Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 8:15 to 9:15 AM.
Shirley devoted her life to caring for others with gentle strength and an open heart. She found joy in the simple moments in life - cooking delicious meals, keeping a tidy home, and cherishing her moment spent with her beloved son, Jeremy. Her sweet and easygoing nature made her a comfort to all who knew her, and she was always ready to lend a helping hand. At home, she was an avid fan of game shows, rarely missing an episode of Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune. Professionally, Shirley served as the office manager for Charles Kettler's law office and later as a bookkeeper for Luverne High School and the Chicken Shack. Her legacy of kindness, humility, and quiet devotion will continue to shine through those who were fortunate enough to know her.
Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William A. "W.A." Neal; her parents, Joseph "Pete" & Lena Garner West; and sister, Linda Williamson. She is survived by her children, Jeremy Messick, Michelle (Bill) Dunn, and Carey (Dakus) Sankey; grandchildren, Eli Messick, Dustin Reaves, Anna Reaves, Austin Bryant, Mikayla Bryant, and Trey Bryant; great-grandchildren, Briar Lanham, Luna Bryant, Ka'orie Carter, and Colton Bradley; siblings, Rita Wingard and Martin West; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Active pallbearers will be Jeremy Messick, John Williamson, Eric Williamson, Andrew West, Gus Williamson, and Steve Williamson.
