Highland Home

Stephen James Davis, 73, a resident of Highland Home, Alabama and originally of Newfoundland, Canada, passed away peacefully in his home on Monday, May 13th, 2024, while surrounded by his family. A celebration of Steve's life will be held at a later time.

Steve was a brash, confident man in both his personal life and professionally. He owned his own general contracting business and considered himself THE master builder. Of course, he was a man of many hats over the years, most likely due to his true love of education and knowledge. Not only was he constantly on the lookout for something new to learn himself, but he instilled the importance of a good education into his children and grandchildren as well. He also taught them the value of hard work as they not only saw how hard he worked his entire life, but he made sure they experienced it firsthand for themselves! Always blessed with a love of working out, Steve also enjoyed participating in bodybuilding competitions in his younger days. He was also known to enjoy "cutting a rug" to a few catchy tunes. He definitely possessed the kind of larger than life personality and survival skills that made his family view him as nearly invincible.

Steve's gruff exterior hid a natural charm he had with people. They gravitated to him more often than not, despite his not being much of an extrovert. He also knew how to treat a lady with respect, which endeared him to many older ladies who knew him. Above all, he was truly dedicated to his family. He was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who always put them first and made sure they knew how much he loved them. He really loved being a "PawPaw" to his grandchildren and great-grands and spending as much time with them as possible. He not only exposed them to his love of travel to his favorite places, especially Germany, but also just giving them his total time and attention so that they could feel his love. They especially enjoyed when he played his guitar for them...even if all of his songs were terrible! Steve was a complicated and talented man, but legacy will always be found in the love he shared with his family. Their hearts grief with his passing, but he will continue to live on in through all of the good times and memories they made together.

Steve was preceded in death by his daughter, Spirit Faith Van Beethoven, and parents, Wilfred Joseph & Rosemary Tizzard Davis. He is survived by his longtime partner and mother of his children, Renee Davis; children, Alece Davis, Stephen (Caitlin) Davis Jr, Athena Davis (Arlan) Campbell, Layla Davis (Anthony Dicks), and Ulysses Davis; grandchildren, Cory Davis, Paul Adams, Danielle Elder, Shaundraya Elder, Khami Rae Campbell, Layton Davis, Trace Dicks, and Wyatt Dicks; several great-grandchildren; siblings, Robert Davis and Edward Davis; and beloved canine companion, Winter or "Dog."
