Steve Cole Hughes

June 20, 1947 — November 8, 2024

Glenwood

Stephan "Steve" Cole Hughes, 77, a resident of Glenwood, Alabama, passed away peacefully at Baptist Medical Center South on Friday, November 8th, 2024. Funeral services for Steve will be held at 11 AM on Monday, November 11th, at Glenwood Baptist Church with Rev. Greg Sanders officiating. He will then be laid to rest beside his beloved wife in Providence Cemetery with Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing. The family will receive friends at the church on Monday for one hour prior to the service.

Steve spent his professional career as a manager for textile factories not only all around the United States but even more far-flung places like Costa Rica. In his free time, one of his favorite activities was loading up in his Mule and heading out to explore any trail he could find in the woods. It was also a good day if he could find a could fishing hole to drop a line in as long he was able to do so. Steve was always the one you called if you wanted to know if you needed an umbrella before leaving the house because he always kept up with the weather. He was also a huge fan of the Troy Trojans. If they played a sport, you could bet Steve watched it! He was never a man to let the grass grow under his feet, so he always found a way to keep himself busy around his house and yard (especially if it meant he could find something that needed burning) and his beloved cats and dogs were usually always by his side.

Steve was most definitely the life of the party wherever he went as he just naturally became the center of attention. It's not surprising given his remarkable sense of humor and never-ending repertoire of jokes. No surprise given he was never shy about saying what was on his mind! Of course, the way you knew he liked you was if he found a way to tease you...and the way to his heart was the combination of Little Debbie cakes and "real" sweet tea. The size of Steve's personality was matched only by the size of his heart. Truly, you'd never find a better man than Steve Hughes. He was the kind of friend anyone would be fortunate to have, and you hit the jackpot if you had him as a neighbor (and he considered everyone in Glenwood his "neighbor"). He was always the first to step up when something needed to be done and consistently went out of his way to help anyone in need. Above all though, he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather (or "Granddaddy") who treasured his family with all his heart. He was the best you could ever hope for and absolutely meant the world to all of them. Words cannot express how much he will be missed by those who knew and loved him, but comfort can be found in the knowledge that he was been reunited with his beloved wife in the arms of their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Steve was preceded in death by his loving wife of 47 years, Becky Hughes; daughter-in-law, Selena Hughes; parents, Wilson & Ruth Tisdale Hughes; and siblings, Carey Hughes and Leigh Jeffcoat. He is survived by his sons, Danny Hughes and Jason (Angela) Hughes; grandchildren, Cole (Anne Lawrence) Hughes, Caitlin Hughes, and Meagan Hughes; sisters, Lynn (Denny) Stallings and Kellie (Bill) Henderson; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

Active pallbearers will be Blake Stallings, Brad Jeffcoat, Kyle Bryan, Keith Linton, Jared Yeoman, and Dan Driver.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Glenwood Baptist Church.
