Mr. Thomas Lamar Penn, 79, a resident of Luverne, Alabama, passed away peacefully at Noland Hospital in Montgomery on Sunday, November 14th, 2021. Funeral services for Mr. Penn will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, November 18th, from the chapel of Turners Funeral Home with Brother Kase Britton and Brother Stae Sanders officiating. Interment will follow in Live Oak Cemetery with Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing.
Mr. Penn was well-known for his proficiency and knowledge of several different sports. In his youth, he played both basketball and baseball at what would become Faulkner University. He left college early to coach high school sports, coaching basketball at Luverne High School and football at Autauga Academy over the years. Sports was always a lifelong passion of his, and one that he constantly kept up with. If you ever needed a score or a statistic, he was your man. He was also a lifelong fan of the Alabama Crimson Tide, and not just the football team, but every sport he could support.
After coaching, Mr. Penn went into the construction business as a carpenter. He was a member of the crew responsible for building the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, and ended his career as the lead carpenter for Troy University. In his free time, he was an avid outdoorsman, and especially loved deer hunting. He was also a longtime member of the Church of Christ in Luverne. Above all, however, Mr. Penn was a devoted family man who loved his wife, children, and grandchildren more than anything else. No one could melt his occasionally gruff exterior like his beloved grandchildren. He has gone on too soon, but his loved ones take comfort in knowing he is no longer suffering in the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Mr. Penn was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Horace & Lauress Watson Penn, and siblings, Juanita Brock, David Penn, and Larry Penn. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 54 years, Janet Anthony Penn; their children, Dawn (Arch) Stephens, Shawn (Angie) Penn, and Lance (Candace) Penn; grandchildren, Hannah Stephens, Mason Penn, Evan Penn, Thomas Penn, and Josie Penn; and several nieces & nephews.
Active pallbearers will be Dale Sanders, Stae Sanders, Andrew Moorer, Rodney Massey, Hunter Royal, and Bobby Owens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 10 - 11 AM.
