Truman Douglass

Truman Douglass, 81, a resident of Highland Home, Alabama, passed away peacefully at Baptist Medical Center South on Monday, August 3rd, 2026. A celebration of Truman's life will be held at a later time.

Truman was born on May 8, 1945, just as the Allies were celebrating the achievement of peace in Europe (VE Day) that ended World War II. After graduating from Highland Home School, he then chose to serve his country in the Vietnam Conflict with the United States Navy for four years. He eventually retired from Montgomery Waterworks after over 25 years. They certainly missed having such a dedicated work as Truman as he always enjoyed keeping himself busy. He was also an easy coworker given that he had an affinity for people and would talk to anyone about anything. Now, that didn't mean he was a pushover for anyone as he may have been more strong-willed than some could handle, but everyone needs a little iron in their spine to make it in this world. In his free time, he loved fishing and watching his old Westerns like Gunsmoke, as well as cheering on the Alabama Crimson Tide on the gridiron. But Truman never forgot his earlier loyalty to his chosen branch of service so the Army v. Navy game was always a big family event throughout the years.

Truman truly counted himself fortunate to marry the love of his life & his high school sweetheart, Peggy Sue Kiser, and raise their beautiful family together. He was always a devoted husband, father, and 'Granddaddy" to the family he loved with all his heart and soul. From him, they learned his compassion for his fellow man and the generosity of the human spirit. He also taught them to take all the slings and arrows life could throw at them with a heaping dose of patience and good humor. He was certainly the bedrock of his family all these years and words could never express how much they loved him nor how much he will be missed. His family will find comfort, though, in the treasure trove of memories made together that will allow him to live on in their hearts and minds for many more years to come.

Truman was preceded in death by his son, James Douglass; parents, Virgil Warren & Sivil Amanda Cottingham Douglass; and his siblings, Carl Douglass, Calvin Douglass, Clyde Douglass, Jason Douglass, Bertha Douglass, Jean Fuller, and Corrine Duncan.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Peggy Kiser Douglass; their children, John Paul (Sunala) Douglass, Patrick Douglass, Jason Perry Douglass, Robert (Leslie) Douglass, and Michelle Douglass; grandchildren, Christopher Douglass, Dustin (Katie) Douglass, Jake Douglass, Courtney Douglass, Gehrig (Brady) Douglass, Chase Douglass, and Robyn (Terry) Hilyer; great-grandchildren, Rose, Bash, Cruz, Beau, and Campbell; and host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the Highland Home Fire Department & First Responders, the doctors & nurses of both Baptist South & Encompass Health, and their family & neighbors for all that was done to help Truman and the family through this difficult time.
