Velma Mozell Bender

Luverne

Velma Mozell Bender, 63, a resident of Luverne, Alabama, passed away at Flowers Hospital in Dothan on Friday, March 14th, 2025. A celebration of Velma's life will be held at a later time.

Velma enjoyed experiencing multiple career paths throughout her life, from being an EMT to working retail. She really enjoyed any job that allowed her to interact with various people. She was just such a bubbly free spirit that people naturally gravitated towards her. And the added bit of sass just made the experience even more enjoyable. Velma was never shy about speaking her mind and you never had to guess where you stood with her. She was a dedicated member of the First Assembly of God and enjoyed the chance to participate in several community outreach programs. At home, she loved cooking for her family and they were always happy to dig in because everything she made was delicious, especially that banana pudding! Above all, she was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she loved all of them dearly, but the ones who called her "MawMaw" were the ones she held closest to heart. She will be sorely missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Velma was preceded in death by her former husband, James R. Wallace; granddaughter, Selena Chyenne Wallace; parents, Billy & Madylean Sullivan Headley; and siblings, James Earl Headley, Billy Jean Headley Broadway, and Martha Jane Elliot. She is survived by her children, William Lowe, James (Kristy) Wallace II, and Windee Wallace; grandchildren, Catori Lowe, James Wallace III, Destiny Wallace, Mathew Wallace, Aaron Sessions, Hailey Wallace, and Malikai Martin; several great-grandchildren; siblings, Randall Headley, Donnie Ray Headley, Earlean Headley, Elma Carroll, Timmie Headley, Tammy Ward, and Priscilla Thompson; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
