Verdie Mae Holmes

Verdie Mae Holmes, 86, a lifelong resident of Glenwood, Alabama, passed away peacefully in her home on Sunday, August 10th, 2025. Funeral services for Verdie will be held at 2 PM on Wednesday, August 13th, at Glenwood Baptist Church with Rev. Greg Sanders and Brother Ron Miles officiating. Interment will follow in Providence Cemetery with Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing. The family will receive friends at the church on Wednesday for one hour prior to the service.

Let me tell you, if you didn't love Verdie, that just means you never met her! She was simply universally loved by all those who did, from family to friends, community, and church family due to her wonderfully sweet demeanor and personality along with her gift for caring for others over the years. She was a lifelong member of both the Glenwood community and the Glenwood Baptist Church. She loved participating in everything from the Festival at the Well to various church activities over the years. Verdie was generally an easygoing and laidback kind of lady, but growing up with three brothers also ensured she had a great sense of humor and an inner toughness to withstand anything she encountered in life....and with two sisters, she certainly learned the art of negotiation! Verdie was an excellent seamstress, but she also absolutely loved shopping. In fact, I don't know that there was ever a deal she could pass up, as her closet would attest to. Above all, she was a devoted sister and aunt to the family she loved with her whole heart and she leaves behind a legacy of love that should be an inspiration to us all.

Verdie was preceded in death by her parents, Cliff & Voncile King Holmes, and sister, Janice Holmes. She is survived by her beloved siblings, Reba Motes, Henry Holmes, Newton (Doris) Holmes, and Hannis Holmes; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
