Voncile Richburg Nichols, 93, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2022. She was born on December 7, 1928 and was a lifelong resident of Luverne, Alabama. Funeral services for Mrs. Nichols will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, July 12th, at the First Baptist Church of Luverne with Brother Clay Crum officiating and Turners Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the church on Tuesday from 10:30 until service time.
She was preceded in death by her beloved and devoted husband of fifty years, Ralph N. Nichols. At her passing, she was the last surviving child of ten siblings born of her parents, the late H.H. & Georgia Richburg. Mrs. Nichols graduated from Luverne High School in 1946 as the salutatorian of her class. Thereafter, she worked for Luverne Bank & Trust Co. for many years, where she broke barriers as she served as one of the bank’s first female officers. During her employment, and with the bank’s encouragement, she earned a banking degree from the Alabama Banking School associated with the University of South Alabama.
Voncile was a fixture in her beloved community of Luverne. She was well-known for her service as the Treasurer of the Emmaus Cemetery Board for many years, and she was also a long-time active member of the First Baptist Church of Luverne. She kept her social calendar active with her activities as a member of the Business Professional Women's Club and took leadership roles in both the Garden Club of Luverne and the Garden Club of Alabama. More than anything, however, she loved her family above all else. Voncile lived a long, full life and has left behind a treasure trove of memories for all of those who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her children, Steve Nichols (Lucy Ann) and Cindy Bowron (Tom); her grandchildren, Caroline Nichols, Hughston Nichols (Sarah Katherine), Steven Nichols (Frances), John Nichols (Rachel), William Simms, Anna Evelyn Simms and Sarah McManus (Daniel); six great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Margaret Nichols and Frances Nichols; and many loved nieces and nephews.
The family extends a special thank you to Concierge Care and their caregivers for their love and support and to the staff at St. Martin’s in the Pines.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to the First Baptist Church of Luverne, P.O. Box 427, Luverne, Alabama 36049 or to the Luverne Emmaus Cemetery Fund, c/o Jimmy Williams, P.O. Box , Luverne, Alabama.
