Waylon Eugene Commander, 54, a resident of Luverne, Alabama, passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday, March 17th, 2024, while surrounded by his family. Funeral services for Waylon will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, March 19th, at Union Baptist Church with Rev. Mason Halacker officiating. Interment will follow in Union Cemetery with Turners Funeral Home of Luverne directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, March 18th, from 6 to 8 PM. He will also lie-in-state for one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church.
Waylon was a well-known and loved man, who was also the definition of selfless. If there was ever anything that needed to be taken care of, whether or not he knew how to do it, it would be done. Family was one of the most important things to him, and he would always make sure DJ, their kids, and his mother were taken care of before worrying about himself. From running around ballparks when the kids were younger to listening to their problems as young adults, he was there through it all. Outside of family and church, Waylon's other home could have been considered the Highland Home Fire & Rescue Department. Oh, how he loved to sit up there on Sunday afternoons. Although battling with a kidney disease, Waylon never let it get the best of him. His determination was way stronger than one could imagine starting his life-long journey of struggles at 18 months old. Up until his last day, he never failed to show his love for any and everyone.
Waylon was preceded in death by his father, Walton Eugene Commander, and grandparents, Lewis & Martha Strickland and Shorty & Mildred Commander. He is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Dorthey Kelley Commander; their children, Cheyenne Joel Commander and Lewis Dalton Commander; mother, Rebecca Strickland Commander; brother, Quentin (Kim) Commander; sister-in-law, Michelle (Travis) Bynog; brother-in-law, Bubba (Amanda) Kelley; nieces & nephews, Jamie Commander, Johnathon (Niki) Bynog, JW Bynog, Alexis (Shane) Donaldson, Bailey Kelley, Christopher Moseley, JD Moseley, and Jacob Moseley; great-nieces, Adalynn Bynog & Emery Donaldson; aunts, Shirley Strickland and Sally Evans; and numerous cousins, extended family members, and friends.
Active pallbearers will be Dalton Commander, Stephen Wilson, Johnathon Bynog, Richard Jordan, Bubba Kelley, and Tommy Furr. Honorary pallbearers will be Quentin Commander, JW Bynog, and the Highland Home Fire & Rescue Squad.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to to the UAB Kidney Transplant Program at www.uab.edu/medicine/transplant/give.
